The Geneva Lake Dark Sky Initiative Scholarship is a one-time scholarship in the amount of $2,500. It is annually offered by the Environmental Education Foundation to one graduating student from an area high school who intends to pursue a degree in environmental studies or closely related area. Requirement and procedures are as follows:

  • Applicants must be willing to, complete, or must have already completed an approved Dark Sky Project.
  • Applicants must complete both a general high school scholarship application and the Geneva Lake Dark Sky Initiative Scholarship Addendum and submit them to the guidance counselor along with reference letters, transcripts and Dark Sky Project narrative (see bottom of addendum) by March 1st.
  • The applicant must be in good academic standing with a sincere interest in conservation, ecology, biology or other environmentally oriented field.
  • Applicants must be accepted by an institution of higher education pursuing a degree in conservation, ecology, biology or other environmentally oriented field.
  • The high school scholarship committee is to receive the applications and select two candidates. The school committee will forward its recommendation to the Foundation for the final selection.
  • Presentation of the award shall be made by a representative of the Environmental Education Foundation at the high school's spring awards ceremony.
  • The scholarship will be paid directly to the student’s college/university at the beginning of the first term.

Area high school students can become involved in dark sky related activities at Yerkes Observatory or may submit documentation about other Dark Sky projects in which they were involved. All projects must be completed before the scholarship money is awarded.

The Geneva Lake Dark Sky Initiative is the Wisconsin Chapter of the International Dark Sky Association. The Geneva Lake Darks Sky Initiative is a board-based community movement committed to raising awareness about light pollution in the Geneva Lake area.

This application should be completed and submitted to your counselor with your high school’s general scholarship application and three letters of recommendation by March 1st.

On an attached sheet (or in the field below if you are submitting electronically), explain the Dark Sky Project you were involved with, including who you worked with, objectives of the project and what were the findings or outcome of your efforts. Include what the project did for you in terms of better understanding and addressing the mission of the Geneva Lake Dark Sky Initiative.
